Meet Your Coach

Hi there, my name is Troy Leinster, and I’ll be your coach for the Typemasters Type Design 101 program. I’m an Australian typeface designer and founder of Leinster Type, and I currently live in Jersey City, just across the river from New York City.

Over the last ten years, I’ve studied under many typeface designers around the world, collecting and refining my type design process, which I now share with others like yourself. In 2021, I founded Typemasters.xyz, and have now coached over 500 designers through the process of developing a typeface from concept to release.

From 2014-2021 I worked at the Hoefler&Co Type Foundry and taught typeface design at Cooper Union in New York. I’m a graduate of Type & Media program at KABK in The Hague and the Type@Cooper program at Cooper Union in New York.

I look forward to working with you to develop your very first typeface.

Troy.

Reviews

Sometimes it’s hard to see problems when starring at it for too long. It is really helpful to have a second set of trained eyes at high professional level like Troy to help look at the design.

Troy has a rare ability to break down complex workflows into simple, compounding steps that foster precision without overwhelm. Working with him kept me consistent and accountable—if neither of us spotted a problem, we moved on. No overthinking, no nitpicking. But beyond technical feedback, our weekly sessions (over the course of a semester) created a rhythm of exchange and reflection that felt like being part of an established foundry environment I never experienced before. A truly strategic collaboration that accelerated my progress.

Troy’s coaching feels like an extension of Type Media for me. Since my native script is not Latin, I want to keep training my eyes. It’s exactly what I need—we had multiple sessions focused on reviewing and correcting my italics, and Troy patiently taught me how to see, sharing tips and tricks along the way. He also showed me his workflow and how to approach the design process.
